11 Dec 2004 - Big Boys' Toys (Craig McTear,
Coffs Coast Advocate)
Steve Brown, Paul D’Olier and Darren Digney
are Coffs Harbour boys who will take their ‘big’
toys to play with the ‘big’ boys in one of Australia’s
popular ocean-racing events.
Steve Brown and co-owner/skipper Paul D’Olier,
and owner/skipper Darren Digney are the local hopefuls in
the prestigious 24th Strathfield Pittwater to Coffs Harbour
Yacht Race which starts on January 2.
The race and associated series has developed into one of
the most popular events of its type in the nation.
Mr Brown and Mr D’Olier have Harbour Design Homes B52,
a Sydney 41 which they bought specifically for the big race
and for use at their Holiday Coast Yachting School. They will
have up to 10 aboard during the race and they have high expectations.
"We’re hoping to finish in the top
20," Mr Brown said. "The boat has done quite a few
Sydney to Hobarts."
Mr Digney will be at the helm of Mistress Again,
a Farr 11.04 which has also contested several Sydney-to-Hobart
races.
"She’s 20 years old now and was very successful
when she was a new boat," he said.
"We’ll be competing in our division and we’re
going in the race to take some local people on board.
"There will be some who have done it before and some
who haven’t. I figure we’ll have about eight on
board."
A top-class fleet of more than 60 boats will
negotiate a new course, which means a new race record no matter
what the race conditions will be like.
The race is extended from the traditional 226 nautical miles
by about eight miles, with a seaward mark a couple of miles
north-east of Barrenjoey and another rounding mark off Palm
Beach.
The facilities of the Coffs Harbour International
Marina will be maximised as usual to handle the demand on
berths when the fleet arrives, while the city council is negotiating
with local boat owners who may want to temporarily relocate
their vessels.
03 Dec 2004 - Locals square up for this
year’s Coffs Harbour Race
(Joanne Dixon & Rob Kothe, Sail-World.com News)
Two yachts and their crews from Coffs Harbour
will line up to compete in the 2005 Strathfield Pittwater
and Coffs Harbour Offshore race series. This is exciting news
for Coffs Harbour Yacht club as it is the first time in a
number of years that the club has had two locally owned and
crewed yachts enter in the race.
Both skippers are local business operators; Darren Digney
taking the helm of his Farr 11.04 ‘Mistress Again’
and Stephen Brown and co-owner Paul D’Olier entering
their recently purchased Sydney 41 ‘Harbour Design Homes
B52’.
Both are keen to compete in this year’s race, not only
against the other yachts in their respective divisions, but
also as an added bonus to race against one another creating
a race within a race for locals to follow.
Mistress Again: She competed in the Queensland ocean racing
classic, the Brisbane to Gladstone race, four times.
Over the last 12 months, she has been reconfigured, with
a new racing keel and Darren and his all local crew including
females, will be racing her to Coffs Harbour for the first
time. The yacht is being sponsored by MBT, Advisernet Australia
and Westlawn Finance.
Harbour Design Homes B52: Has had good results in the Gosford
to Lord Howe race and has raced in the Sydney to Hobart four
times, the most recent in 2002.
The original crew is from the Coffs Harbour boat ‘Talofa’
(Northshore 38). The all local crew including two females,
will be racing her for the first time together, in order to
deliver her to Coffs Harbour. Once in Coffs Harbour she will
be utilised as a Sail Training/Offshore sailing boat and known
as ‘Holiday Coast Yachting’.
The race, which started out in 1981 as a sprint from Sydney
up the coast to South Solitary Island and return to Pittwater,
is now in its 24th year and has grown to be one of the largest
races of its type in Australia.
